From the Passano Historic Structure Index at MdHS: This was the original site of the residence of Bradley T. Johnson (1829-1903), C.S.A. until about 1890. In 1925, the then cleared site was quietly sold to private developers who constructed North Avenue Market. The market was a private operation which covered the block (from 14-34) and tried to reproduce the same services offered by the markets operated by the city.
The market opened at a bad time; the Depression plunged it almost immediately into financial difficulties, and with the end of World War II, it began to be eclipsed by the ‘super’ markets opening around it. A severe fire closed it’s doors in 1968.
